Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model No. 2 Old Model Revolver, also known as the No. 2 Old Army, is a single-action revolver chambered in .32 Rimfire Long. Built on a tip-up frame, it features a 6-shot non-fluted cylinder measuring approximately 1.18 inches in length. Standard barrels were octagonal and ribbed, generally available in five- or six-inch lengths; 4-inch barrels are rare, and extremely few 8-inch barrels are known. Barrels typically bear the inscription “Smith & Wesson Springfield, Mass.” while the cylinder is engraved with patent dates—“Patented April 3, 1855; July 5, 1859; Dec. 18, 1860”—in fine lettering around its circumference. The revolver came standard with smooth rosewood grips on a square butt frame, though pearl, ivory, and other materials were occasionally offered. Serial numbers were usually on the right grip panel, and assembly or casting numbers can be found near the barrel’s forcing cone, on the cylinder face, and beneath the grip on the frame. The tip-up frame lacks a trigger guard, featuring a spur trigger.

Sights include a round blade front sight driven into the barrel and a notch rear sight cut into the cylinder stop leaf. The left sideplate is secured with a single screw. While popular during the Civil War era, the revolver was never officially adopted by the U.S. Army. Its forged wrought iron frame proved durable, though many look-alike copies were produced abroad. Finish options varied: roughly 80% were blue, and 10% nickel-plated, while the remainder featured half-plate, silver, engraved, or other special finishes. Advanced collectors recognize multiple evolutionary types of the Model Two, with some examples marked “2D QUALITY” due to minor casting imperfections. Early production featured two pins in the top strap instead of three. Rare modifications have been observed, often resulting from post-factory gunsmithing.

Notable variations include sideplate-mounted safeties (examples in the 57,000 serial number range), dual firing pins for both centerfire and rimfire cartridges, and adaptations for rod ejection. Because provenance for such modifications is sometimes uncertain, they are generally treated as exceptional. Detailed analysis of nine evolutionary types of the Model Two can be found in Ronald H. Curtis’s article in Vol. 1 of the SWCA reprint of the S&W Journal. Total production is estimated at approximately 77,155 revolvers, manufactured from circa 1861 to 1874, with serial numbers ranging from 1 to 77,155.
