Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The .44 Magnum caliber was introduced in January 1956 as a 6-shot, double-action revolver. It was built on a square butt, 5-screw N-Target frame, and came in a blue or nickel finish. Initially, it was cataloged in a 4 or 6 ½-inch barrel, with a 500" target hammer, 500" target trigger, and target sights that consisted of a red ramp insert front sight and a micrometer click rear sight. The rear sight blade was adjustable for windage and elevation and had a white outline. The revolver featured a half-lug barrel with a shrouded extractor rod and a fluted, counter-bored cylinder. The diamond checkered goncalo alves grips had a slight palm swell, and collectors refer to these style grips as "Coke Bottle" grips. Early revolvers had a serrated backstrap with 6 grooves while later pre-29s after S-167000 had 10 grooves.

Four screw Pre-Model 29s are those where the top side plate screw was eliminated. Although the engineering drawing for this modification was issued in September 1956, 4-screw revolvers began to ship in 1957 beginning around serial number S-167500. Revolvers with serial numbers as high as S-184000 may be found as pre-Model 29s without the model number stamped in the yoke. Six and a half and four-inch guns in both blue and nickel finish are typical. Five-inch barrels began to appear in early 1958. Several hundred pre-Model 29 revolvers were produced in the S-17800 to S-179000 range, primarily in blue finish, but five-inch nickel guns have been documented. Later 4-screw pre-model 29's will not have the serial number stamped in the ejector rod shroud or on the rear cylinder face.

The Smith & Wesson Model 29 is a double-action revolver that can hold six shots and uses the .44 Magnum cartridge. This firearm was produced by Smith & Wesson, a company based in the United States. The standard models of the Smith & Wesson Model 29 come in different barrel sizes such as 3, 4, 5, 6, 6 1⁄2, 8 3⁄8, and 10 5⁄8 inches. However, other barrel lengths are available by special order from Smith & Wesson's Custom Shop or can be custom built by gunsmiths. The version with a 5-inch barrel has a full-length underlug. The Model 29 had two finish options - a highly polished blued or nickel-plated surface. When it was first introduced, it was one of the most powerful production handguns available. However, it was later surpassed by other handguns that were chambered for even larger cartridges such as the .454 Casull and .50 Action Express. The Smith & Wesson Model 29 gained its worldwide fame by being associated with the fictional character "Dirty Harry" Callahan.
