Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The .38 Chief’s Special “Pre-Model 36” is a significant firearm in Smith & Wesson's history, marking their first foray into small-frame revolvers chambered for the .38 S&W Special cartridge. Introduced around 1950, this revolver featured a major redesign of the I frame, making it longer and taller and incorporating a coiled mainspring instead of the traditional leaf spring. This innovative design provided a more robust and reliable mechanism. It led to the creation of the Improved I frame, which became a standard for subsequent models and ultimately evolved into the J frame. The Pre-Model 36 is equipped with a five-shot fluted cylinder measuring 1.52 inches in length to accommodate the .38 S&W Special cartridge, and it was available with either a 2-inch round or a 3-inch barrel, both paired with a round or square butt respectively. Early models are distinguished by their round blade front sight and a five-screw frame, which quickly transitioned to a flat latch thumbpiece, and features like a smooth backstrap, fore strap, and a somewhat rounded trigger guard. Variations included different screw configurations (five, four, and three screws) and changes in the front sight design, evolving from a non-serrated ramp to a serrated ramp sight. The early production revolvers had shorter grips and grip frames, which were not interchangeable with later J frame grips, but by 1952 or 1953, these were replaced with longer grips and a standard J frame size. The model's transition from the “Pre-Model 36” to the Model 36 continued until 1999, with serial numbers ranging from 1 to 786544. This revolver's blend of compact size, innovative design, and reliable performance cemented its place as a classic in the evolution of small-frame revolvers.
