Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Safety Hammerless, 2nd Model .32 S&W, 3-inch (Blue) — often nicknamed the “New Departure” or “Lemon Squeezer” — is a classic turn-of-the-century top-break revolver that embodies both elegance and compact self-defense utility. Built between about 1902 and 1909, only around 78,500 of these were made in that model run. What makes this variant particularly distinctive is its hammerless design: the hammer is entirely enclosed, giving the gun a snag-free profile, while a grip safety on the backstrap must be fully depressed to allow the trigger to function. The break-open, or “tip-over,” frame allows the barrels to tilt down when the top strap latch is operated, and this simultaneously activates an extractor mechanism to push out spent cases — a clever design for quick reloading in its era. Capacity is five rounds in a fluted cylinder, and it’s chambered in .32 S&W, a moderate-power round by today’s standards but very practical for concealed carry at the time. The 3-inch barrel lends a compact, balanced feel that’s easy to carry, yet long enough to offer a usable sight radius. Sights are fundamental — a fixed pinned front blade and a notched topstrap — consistent with its role as a self-defense or “pocket” revolver. The blue finish on many of these models (though they were also available in nickel) gives the gun a handsome, traditional look, particularly when paired with the hard-rubber grips commonly seen on the 2nd Model. Mechanically, the DA-only trigger pull is known to be strong (typical for safety-hammerless S&W designs), giving it a somewhat heavy but deliberate feel — slightly mitigated by the simplicity and reliability of the design.
