Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Today, handgun consumers enjoy an unprecedented array of high-quality choices. In the past, options were limited—some would say to just a handful—but now, numerous top-tier products are available. These handguns promise years of dependable performance, offering practical protection and personal satisfaction. Whether seeking straightforward, out-of-the-box usability or intricate customization options, there's a perfect match for every buyer. Advances in construction, machining, and materials have reached new heights, enhancing durability and performance. This conviction was reaffirmed while exploring the SHOT Show floor in 2017, where the breadth and quality of available handguns underscored this golden age of choice for firearm enthusiasts.

Firearms customization has evolved dramatically since their inception, allowing gun owners to tailor every aspect of their weapons. From modifying stocks and grips for comfort and functionality to intricate metal engraving that transforms firearms into works of art, customization options abound. Engraving, in particular, stands out as a popular and awe-inspiring enhancement. Visiting personal and public collections or museums reveals the astonishing craftsmanship behind engraved firearms. Scenes of hunting expeditions, picturesque landscapes, and elegant scrollwork elevate these guns to a level of artistic excellence, some even prized as valuable gifts to dignitaries and collectors alike.

Despite its popularity, hand engraving by skilled masters is gradually becoming a rarity, requiring extensive training and experience. Today, commissioning a hand-engraved firearm entails considerable wait times and high costs, making them prized investments for collectors seeking exclusivity and rarity. However, advancements in computer-aided machining over the past decade have opened new avenues. While lacking the artisanal touch of hand engraving, machine-engraved firearms now boast impressive precision and aesthetics. Early attempts by manufacturers were met with mixed results, but recent advancements have produced machine-engraved guns that rival traditional craftsmanship in appearance and quality.

Smith & Wesson is at the forefront of this trend, offering a selection of revolvers and a revered 1911 pistol model with high-quality machine engraving. The "Engraved 1911" from Smith & Wesson exemplifies this blend of tradition and modernity. Built upon their SW1911 E-Series platform in .45 ACP, this pistol features a stainless steel construction with a matte silver finish. The slide is adorned with scroll engraving on the flats, showcasing meticulous detail and consistency typically associated with handcrafted pieces. Sights are three-dot for enhanced aiming, with serrations on the slide top and rear to minimize glare. Notably, the front and rear of the slide sport fish-scale-like cocking serrations, adding both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Further enhancing its appeal, the Engraved 1911 includes checkered frontstrap and mainspring housing for improved grip, along with laminate E-Series grip panels for added control. The frame incorporates an extended beavertail grip safety and a precise single-action trigger for optimal performance. Each Engraved 1911 comes with two 8-round magazines for practical use.

Critically, the machine-engraved patterns on the Engraved 1911 exhibit clean lines and consistent depth, demonstrating the advancements in machining technology. Each side of the pistol features subtly adapted engraving patterns tailored to its contours, ensuring a symmetrical and visually appealing design. While lacking the unique variations of hand engraving, the precision and quality of machine engraving make it an accessible option for firearm enthusiasts seeking custom aesthetics without the extended wait times associated with artisanal craftsmanship.

Feedback from various gun enthusiasts, including collectors and range regulars, attests to the Engraved 1911's universal appeal. Its aesthetic appeal and craftsmanship drew admiration from seasoned collectors, affirming its status as a beautiful and functional .45 ACP pistol worthy of display.
