Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Sigma, introduced in 1994, marked the company’s first use of synthetic materials in pistol construction, featuring a high-strength polymer frame. Its design, similar to the Glock safe-action pistol, led to controversy and speculation over potential patent infringement. The Sigma was available in both .40 S&W and 9×19mm Parabellum cartridges and was one of the first pistols specifically designed to handle the .40 S&W round. In 1999, Smith & Wesson released the VE series, an "enhanced" version with improved grip, trigger, and a larger ejection port, while switching to a black polymer frame with a stainless steel or black melonite slide. They also retired the 4.5-inch barrel, making all Sigmas post-1999 "2nd generation" models with a 4.0-inch barrel. Shortly thereafter, an accessory rail was added to the VE series without changing its model number. Smith & Wesson later introduced the SW40P and SW9P, which were similar to the VE models but featured a ported barrel and slide to reduce muzzle flip. By 2010, the Sigma was replaced by the SD series, which retained compatibility with Sigma magazines.
