Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Sigma was the company's first attempt at using synthetic materials in pistol construction, with high-strength polymer material for the frame. Its design and operation are similar to a Glock safe-action pistol, which led to controversy and speculation regarding patent infringement. The Sigma was introduced in 1994 and features a pre-set striker firing mechanism and is available in both .40 S&W cartridges and 9×19mm Parabellum. It was one of the first pistols purpose-designed to handle the .40 S&W.

In 1999, Smith & Wesson introduced the VE series, which was billed as "enhanced" and featured an improved grip, trigger, and enlarged ejection port. This model was brought back to the black coloration of the polymer frame, paired with a stainless steel or black melonite slide. During this time, Smith & Wesson also switched all Sigmas to the 4.0-inch barrel, retiring the 4.5-inch barrel. Sigmas produced after this time are known as "2nd generation" Sigmas. Shortly after the VE series was introduced, Smith & Wesson further improved the model by adding an accessory rail but did not change the model number to reflect this update

Sometime after 1999, Smith & Wesson introduced the SW40P and SW9P, which were identical to the SW40VE and SW9VE but added porting to the barrel and slide. This was done to vent gases upwards to combat the muzzle flip associated with recoil. In 2010, Smith & Wesson replaced the Sigma pistols with the SD series, which uses the same magazines as their full-size Sigma counterparts.
