Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Third Model, often referred to as the Perfected Target Pistol, is a notable firearm in the lineage of precision handguns, particularly celebrated for its role in the evolution of target shooting. Chambered in .22 Long Rifle, this model features a robust 10-inch barrel, which enhances accuracy and stability during firing. Its blue finish not only adds an element of classic aesthetics but also contributes to the firearm's durability. The design has roots in the .38 DA Perfected Model, yet the Third Model distinguishes itself with a unique trigger that sits centered in the trigger guard, allowing for a smooth shooting experience. Ergonomically, the Third Model is equipped with checkered walnut extension grips that not only provide a firm hold but also feature the iconic Smith & Wesson medallions, elevating the aesthetic appeal of the pistol. The front sight is a pinned Paine target blade, meticulously integrated into the barrel rib, while the rear sight offers improved windage adjustments through screws on either side of the sight leaf. This thoughtful design enhances the shooter's ability to make precise adjustments, catering to the needs of competitive shooters. With approximately 6,949 units produced between 1909 and 1923, the Third Model occupies a unique space in Smith & Wesson's history, bridging the gap between functionality and craftsmanship. Its serial number range begins at 4617 and extends to 11641, with some models interspersed within the serial numbers of the Second Model, illustrating a fascinating narrative of production evolution. Collectors and enthusiasts alike admire this model for its historical significance and performance capabilities, solidifying its place in the annals of target shooting.
