Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson U.S. Army Model 1917 is a historically significant revolver developed to meet the urgent demand for sidearms during World War I. As production of the M1911 semi-automatic pistol lagged behind wartime needs, the U.S. government turned to revolver manufacturers to fill the gap. Smith & Wesson answered with the Model 1917—a robust, six-shot, double-action revolver chambered in .45 ACP. Built on Smith & Wesson’s large N-frame, it features a 5½-inch barrel, a round blade front sight with a U-notch rear, and smooth wood grips, giving it a utilitarian yet classic military appearance. Because the .45 ACP cartridge is rimless and designed for semi-automatics, the M1917 required the use of moon clips for reliable extraction—though a later development, the .45 Auto Rim cartridge, allowed for clipless use in civilian settings.

With over 153,000 units produced by Smith & Wesson between 1917 and 1919, the Model 1917 played a crucial role on the battlefield, particularly among "Doughboys" of the American Expeditionary Force. Its service extended far beyond World War I, seeing use in World War II, the Korean War, and even during the Vietnam War by tunnel rats. The revolver was praised for its stopping power, durability, and simplicity, making it a practical choice for support troops such as tank crews and artillery units. The British military also employed the M1917 during both world wars. With over five decades of active service, the Smith & Wesson Model 1917 stands as a testament to American ingenuity and reliability, earning its place as one of the longest-serving revolvers in U.S. military history.
