Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Stosel No. 1 Patent pistol was a Spanish-made semi-automatic handgun produced during the early 20th century, most likely before or during World War I, as part of the broader family of "Ruby-type" pistols. These pistols were heavily inspired by John Browning’s 1903 Pocket Hammerless design and were typically chambered in .32 ACP or .25 ACP. The Stosel No. 1, like many similar designs of the time, was manufactured in the Eibar region of Spain—an area densely populated with small arms producers. While Retolaza Hermanos is the most frequently associated maker, evidence suggests that multiple manufacturers in the region also produced pistols under the "Stosel" name or near-identical patterns. This decentralized production approach was common in Spain at the time, especially during wartime when export demand—such as from the French military—led to rapid, large-scale manufacturing by many subcontractors. As a result, pistols marked “Stosel No. 1 Patent” may differ slightly in details and finish, reflecting their origin from different workshops. Although precise records are limited, the Stosel No. 1 remains a representative example of Spain’s prolific and fragmented handgun production during that era.
