Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Spanish Model 1916 short rifle was officially adopted in 1916 to replace the M1895 carbine, whose shorter barrel did not fully harness the greater velocity of the newer M1913 cartridge. Drawing on the action of the earlier Model 1893, the M1916 featured several enhancements: a flushed, left-rear receiver cut for smoother stripper-clip loading, ventilation holes in both bolt and receiver to redirect gas in the event of a case rupture, a bent bolt handle, and a full-length wooden stock equipped with a bayonet lug designed for the M1913 sword bayonet. Robust front sight protectors were introduced a few years earlier and were retained. The rifle’s barrel measured approximately 21 3/4 inches, and evidence suggests that a possibly experimental carbine version with a 17.7-inch barrel was also produced.

Manufacturing took place at Fábrica de Armas in Oviedo from 1916 until 1951, and at Industrias de Guerra de Cataluña during the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939. Despite its 1916 designation, many rifles incorporated later improvements in metallurgy and production methods, with some postwar rifles reflecting updated standards well into the 1940s and 1950s. Beginning in 1943, large numbers of M1916 rifles were rechambered in 7.92x57mm Mauser to align with Spain’s adoption of the M43 rifle. In the 1950s, both M1893 and M1916 rifles were further updated to the 7.62x51mm NATO (.308 Winchester) cartridge.

While many retained their original stocks and fittings, others were modified into the FR-7 configuration, featuring shortened 18.5-inch barrels, cut-down stocks, and modern aperture sights for training and Guardia Civil service. Collectors and historians note that many M1916 rifles bear scrubbed or absent receiver crests, particularly after refurbishments during or after the Spanish Civil War; some retain the Falangist or Guardia Civil crest, while others show only serial numbers—evidence of widespread refurbishment and reissue.
