Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Model 1916 rifle was adopted by Spain on 14 November 1916 to replace the M1895 carbine, whose short barrel was unsuitable for the high velocity of the 7x57mm Mauser cartridge. The M1916 featured a left-rear receiver cut for stripper clip loading, similar to the M1913, but with the cut flush with the stock. It also included gas escape holes in both the bolt and receiver to vent gas in case of a case rupture. The rifle retained the bent bolt handle, a full-length stock, and a bayonet lug compatible with the M1913 sword bayonet and incorporated large sight protectors starting in 1913. The standard M1916 had a 21.75-inch (552 mm) barrel, though a shorter 17.7-inch (450 mm) carbine version was also produced in limited numbers, likely as an experimental model. Manufactured at Fábrica de Armas from 1916 to 1951 and at Industrias de Guerra de Cataluña from 1936 to 1939 during the Spanish Civil War, the M1916 was in service for several decades. In 1943, many of these rifles were converted to the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge as part of Spain’s adoption of the M43 rifle, with some receiving new stocks featuring pistol grips and finger grooves.

During the 1950s, a further conversion to 7.62×51mm NATO ammunition took place, resulting in rifles that retained much of their original furniture, although some were further modified to the FR7 standard with an 18.5-inch (470 mm) barrel, cut-down stocks, and modern aperture sights. Both the M1916 and the FR7 were used for military training and by the Guardia Civil, alongside the similarly modified FR8, which was based on the M43 action.
