Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
During the 1990s, the Czech CZ75 pistol was increasingly recognized as one of the top combat handguns of the 20th century. However, due to being manufactured behind the Iron Curtain, these guns were difficult to obtain in America. To address this issue, Springfield came up with an innovative idea that had the potential to succeed. During the Cold War, it was difficult to get the Czech-designed CZ-75 in the US. However, an Italian company called Tanfoglio created a nearly perfect copy of the CZ-75 in the 1980s. Their gun was marketed as the TZ-75, and it was quite different from the CZ-75 in terms of appearance. The TZ-75 had a more ergonomic grip, a squared trigger guard, and a larger spur-type hammer. The sights were larger and of the three-dot type. It also had a slide-mounted safety/decocker and the option of ambidextrous controls. Internally, it had a slide-mounted safety. The TZ-75 was made of milled steel engineering and had no polymer or plastics involved.

The TZ 75 gun was imported by FIE to the US from 1982 to 1989. The TZ 75 series 88, which was an improved version with a frame-mounted safety, was imported between 1988 and 1990. Later on, EAA started importing the gun and named it the Witness series. They made more changes to the gun. After 1995, Springfield picked up the T75 Series 88 and rebranded it as their P9. In around 1990, Springfield began importing guns from Italy and labeled them under their own brand. This happened after FIE stopped importing the TZ75 and before EAA started filling the gap. It's important to note that even though these guns were made in Italy, they were prominently marked as 'Springfield P9' on the frame and slide.

The Springfield P9 was a versatile firearm that came in several finishes such as a two-tone with blued upper/slide Assembly and industrial hard-chromed lower/frame Assembly, blued, and chrome. Apart from the standard CZ 16-shot 9x19mm, it was also available in an 11-shot .40S&W and .45ACP variant as well as a competition-grade 15-shot 9x21mm. The standard model came with a 4.5-inch barrel and was 8 inches overall, but there were Compact and Subcompact models available with 3.75 and 3.50-inch barrels respectively. The Springfield P9 provided gun enthusiasts with plenty of options to choose from. After EAA became fully invested in the US with their Witness line, which was also manufactured by Tanfoglio from their Series 88 TZ75, Springfield found it difficult to keep their P9s afloat and eventually discontinued them in 1993. Any new old stock was sold off within a few years after that. Today, with the market having to compete with actual Czech-made CZ's after the end of the Cold War, P9s are all but forgotten.
