Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Springfield Model 1870 Trapdoor rifle, produced by Springfield Armory between 1870 and 1873, was the final variant of the .50-70 Trapdoor series and represented a key step in the evolution of U.S. military firearms from Civil War-era muzzle-loaders to modern breech-loading rifles. Designed by Erskine S. Allin as a refinement of the earlier Model 1868, it featured a shorter receiver and a newly manufactured .50-caliber, 32.5-inch barrel while retaining Civil War-era lockplates and other furniture. The hinged trapdoor breechblock allowed for rapid loading of the .50-70 cartridge, giving the single-shot rifle a rate of fire of approximately 8–10 rounds per minute. Approximately 11,531 rifles were manufactured, alongside 362 carbines produced in 1871 for cavalry use, which had 22-inch barrels and were fitted with a swivel-bar and ring assembly for slinging.

Two main variations reflected incremental improvements, including repositioned rear sights and upgraded cleaning rods. Used in training and frontier service during the American Indian Wars, the Model 1870 bridged earlier Trapdoor designs and served as a prototype for the widely issued .45-70 Government Model 1873, cementing its place as an important milestone in U.S. military small arms development.
