Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this SCARCE and UNIQUE pump-action rifle for a penny-start auction; this is the Standard Arms Co. Model M!

Approximately 7,000 Standard Arms Company Model M rifles were produced between 1909 and 1912. Despite its innovative design, the rifle faced issues and complex mechanical features that limited its commercial success. As a result, production remained relatively low, making surviving examples of the Model M rare and highly collectible among early semi-automatic firearms enthusiasts.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Standard Arms Company Model M is a unique and relatively obscure entry in early 20th-century American firearms design, notable for being one of the first semi-automatic rifles intended for sporting use in the U.S. Manufactured in Wilmington, Delaware between 1909 and 1912, the Model M was chambered in the then-popular .30 Remington cartridge and featured an unusual hybrid operating system. It utilized a gas-operated semi-automatic action but also included a manual pump-action mechanism as a backup—a reflection of the transitional nature of firearm design during this period. The rifle’s intent was to combine the reliability of manually operated firearms with the innovation of self-loading technology, appealing to hunters and sportsmen who were beginning to trust semi-automatic systems.

Mechanically, the Model M was ambitious, featuring a gas piston located beneath the barrel that cycled the bolt for semi-automatic fire. If the gas system failed or became fouled, the shooter could manually cycle the action using the pump handle integrated into the forend—an unusual and complex solution that ultimately limited the rifle's long-term reliability and commercial success. The Model M also stood out with its brass receiver and decorative flourishes, indicating an effort to market it as a high-end sporting rifle. However, due to manufacturing challenges, limited durability, and competition from more robust designs like the Remington Model 8, the Model M had a short production run and was discontinued after only a few years. Today, the Standard Arms Model M is a rare collector’s item and a fascinating example of early semi-automatic rifle innovation in the American firearms industry.
