The Star Model BM, introduced by Spanish manufacturer Star Bonifacio Echeverría, S.A. in 1972, was designed as a compact, steel-framed variant of the long-lived Model B series. While visually reminiscent of the Colt 1911, the BM diverged mechanically—omitting the iconic grip safety, employing a thumb safety that blocks the hammer rather than the sear, and featuring a trigger that pivots on a roll pin rather than moving straight back. Produced in significant numbers—approximately 217,700 units from 1972 until the end of production in 1992—this robust firearm saw widespread use in Spanish police and military forces, including the Guardia Civil, and saw service in conflicts such as the Rhodesian Bush War and the South African Border War. Early BM pistols featured polished finishes, while later production, after around serial number 1,560,901 (circa 1981) adopted matte treatments, simpler rollmarks, reduced slide serrations, and a serrated ramp front sight to streamline manufacturing.
