Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The .44 Auto Mag pistol (AMP) is a semi-automatic pistol that uses a large caliber. It was designed by the Auto Mag Corporation between 1966 and 1971 to make a .44 AMP chambered semi-automatic pistol. The pistol has gained popularity due to its reputation and looks, making it a hit in cinema and novels. The ATF lists several versions of the pistol as “Curios and Relics.” In 1970, the Auto Mag Corporation's president, Harry Sanford, opened a factory in Pasadena, California. The factory shipped its first pistol on August 8, 1971. However, the company declared bankruptcy on May 3, 1972, after producing fewer than 3,000 pistols. The company opened and closed several times from 1973 through 1982 under various names, including TDE (Trade Deed Estates), OMC, Thomas Oil Company, High Standard, and AMT (Arcadia Machine & Tool).
During this period, an additional 6,000 pistols were produced and sold, bringing the total number of pistols produced to approximately 9,000. After Harry Sanford's death in 1996, his son Walter continued selling spare parts online through automagparts.com. The production guns were made in .44 AMP, while experimental pistols were made in .45 ACP, .30 AMP, .357 AMP, and .41 JMP. Changing calibers typically only required exchanging the barrel since the frame, magazine, and bolt could be used with all calibers except .45 ACP. Between 1971 and 2000, the Auto Mag underwent eleven different name changes. This model is the same as the famous gun used by Clint Eastwood in the Dirty Harry film “SUDDEN IMPACT” after he loses his S&W model 29. He is quoted in the movie saying, “Well, this is the .44 Magnum Auto Mag, and it holds a 300-grain cartridge. And if properly used, it can remove the fingerprints.” Less than 9000 of these handguns were produced as the cost of production was too high to continue profitably. The short recoil-operated Auto Mag pistol featured a rotary bolt with locking lugs located at the front, similar to the M-16/AR-15 rifle. The .357 AMP is pretty interesting, as it can throw 158-grain bullets over 1800 fps and 125s over 2000 fps, and it was the choice of some hunters for its flatter trajectory. At the time, this was the only pistol of its kind. This is truly an incredible piece of American Firearms history.
