The Thompson/Center Encore, introduced in 1983, took the break-action platform to an entirely new level. Built on a frame far larger and stronger than the original Contender, the Encore was engineered to handle everything from small-bore rimfire to some of the most powerful cartridges ever chambered in a single-shot firearm. Its redesigned trigger and opening mechanism made operation smoother and stronger, while its massive versatility turned it into a true do-it-all system. The Encore has been offered in over 86 cartridges—stretching from the mild .22 Hornet all the way up to the thundering .416 Rigby, and even a one-off pistol barrel chambered in the legendary .600 Nitro Express.

Beyond rifle and pistol barrels, the platform also supports shotgun configurations in 28, 20, and 12 gauge, as well as muzzleloading barrels in .45, .50, and 12 gauge with #209 primer ignition. In 2007, rimfire barrels in .22 LR and .17 HMR were introduced, using a special monoblock design that fit the frame without modification. Few firearms in history can match the Encore’s combination of strength, adaptability, and sheer range of chamberings—making it one of the most versatile platforms ever created.
