The Thompson/Center Greyhawk is a muzzle-loading rifle. With its side-lock action and percussion cap ignition, its design is traditional except for the materials used in its construction. Instead of blued steel and wood, the Greyhawk uses stainless steel and composites. This primitive type of firearm must be loaded by measuring out a quantity of black powder, dumping it into the barrel, and then stuffing a cloth-patched lead ball down the barrel with a ramrod. Even though muzzleloaders technically became obsolete when the metallic cartridge was introduced in the mid-1800s, they remain popular today because of extended hunting seasons that permit only the use of primitive firearms such as this.
