Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Tingle Manufacturing Company Hawkin rifle is a black powder muzzleloader that reflects the mid-20th-century revival of traditional American firearms. Produced in the 1960s by Tingle Manufacturing of Shelbyville, Indiana, the Hawkin was one of the earliest commercially available replicas of the classic 19th-century Hawken rifle, long before companies like Thompson/Center and Investarm popularized the style. The Tingle Hawkin retained many of the visual and functional elements associated with the frontier rifle, such as a sturdy half-stock design, double set triggers, and a heavy octagonal barrel designed to handle the stout powder charges favored by hunters. Chamberings typically included larger bore sizes suitable for deer, elk, and even bear, reflecting its identity as a robust hunting piece rather than just a casual plinker. The rifle’s build quality and accurate shooting capabilities made it a serious tool for black powder enthusiasts during a period when the muzzleloading hobby was only beginning to gain widespread popularity in America. What makes the Tingle Hawkin particularly notable in historical and collector circles is its place as a forerunner in the modern muzzleloading movement. While later replicas from larger companies would refine and mass-produce the design, Tingle’s rifles were produced in relatively limited numbers, making them both rarer and more sought after today. Their craftsmanship, while somewhat simpler than high-end custom muzzleloaders, was solid and dependable, earning the respect of shooters who valued durability and accuracy. The use of quality American walnut stocks and traditional iron furniture gave them a rugged authenticity, while the heavy barrel contributed to stable shooting. For collectors, the Tingle Hawkin represents both a functional black powder rifle and a piece of firearms history, bridging the gap between the original 19th-century plains rifles and the commercial black powder renaissance that swept the U.S. in the late 20th century. Its scarcity compared to later models, combined with its role in shaping modern muzzleloading culture, makes it an especially interesting rifle for those passionate about American firearms heritage.
