Tingle Manufacturing Co., founded by Robert G. “Bob” Tingle of Shelbyville, Indiana, was a small but remarkably innovative maker of mid-20th-century black-powder firearms. From the late 1950s until Tingle’s untimely death in 1978, the company produced a variety of percussion muzzle-loaders—including the noted “Model of 1960” single-shot pistols, half-stock .45-caliber rifles such as the 1962 Hawken style, mule-ear side-hammer shotguns, and even a limited run of about 25 massive .44 Blackpowder Magnum revolvers. Tingle’s guns, often built in a humble blacksmith-style shop using surplus and scrap materials, earned a reputation for excellent accuracy, inventive engineering (such as coil-spring percussion targets and frame-mounted firing pins), and solid quality at reasonable prices. Tingle’s idiosyncratic creations remain valued by muzzle-loader enthusiasts for their distinctive combination of craftsmanship and character.
