Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Mosin–Nagant, officially designated the “Three-Line Rifle, Model 1891,” was developed between 1882 and 1891 and adopted by the Russian Empire as its standard infantry rifle. Known in Russia and the former Soviet Union as vintovka Mosina and informally as mosinka, it was a five-shot, bolt-action rifle with an internal magazine, chambered in 7.62x54mmR. Over 37 million rifles were produced across its many variations, making it one of the most mass-produced military bolt-action rifles in history. Among these variations, the M1891 Dragoon was introduced as a slightly shorter and lighter version of the infantry rifle, intended for mounted troops but equally useful for standard infantry service. This Dragoon configuration would later serve as the direct foundation for the Soviet modernization program that created the M91/30. Adopted in 1930, the M91/30 standardized and modernized earlier designs by introducing a shorter barrel, a hooded post front sight, and a new tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters, replacing the old Konovalov-style arshin-calibrated sights. The rifle retained the five-round stripper clip–fed magazine and rugged simplicity of the original design.

Early examples were built on finely machined hexagonal receivers, but by 1935–1936 production shifted to round receivers to streamline wartime manufacturing. Mass production took place at the Tula and Izhevsk arsenals, where millions of M91/30s were turned out, especially during the Second World War. Issued in staggering numbers to Soviet infantry during the Great Patriotic War, the rifle was heavy and somewhat outdated by mid-century standards, yet it earned a reputation for reliability, durability in harsh conditions, and effective range. During this transition, existing stocks of M1891 Dragoon rifles were upgraded to the new M91/30 pattern in arsenal conversions, creating what collectors today call “Ex-Dragoons.” These rifles had their original arshin-marked Konovalov rear sights replaced with metric tangent sights, their front blades updated to the hooded post, and other small fittings like barrel bands and handguards brought in line with 91/30 standards.

While nearly indistinguishable from purpose-built M91/30s once updated, ex-Dragoons can often be identified by their pre-1930 barrel marks, hexagonal receivers, and occasional sight base modifications. Produced and refurbished at the same facilities that made new rifles, such as Tula and Izhevsk, these rifles represent the transitional phase between Imperial Russian and Soviet arms production. Today, the Mosin–Nagant stands as an enduring symbol of Russian and Soviet military history, with the M91/30 and its Ex-Dragoon counterparts especially prized by collectors and shooters for their durability, historical significance, and direct connection to one of the most widely used rifles of the 20th century.
