Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
After experimenting with several repeating bolt-action rifle designs, the Russian Empire officially adopted a new standard infantry rifle in 1891. Chambered for the 7.62x54R cartridge, the rifle was the result of a design collaboration between Russian engineer Sergei Mosin and Belgian designer Léon Nagant, whose primary contribution was the magazine and feed system. Officially designated the “Three-Line Rifle, Model of 1891” (with a “line” being 1/10th of an inch), it is more commonly known in the United States as the Mosin-Nagant M91. Initial production was carried out at the Russian arsenals of Izhevsk, Tula, and Sestroretsk. However, due to early delays in domestic manufacturing, Russia contracted the French firm Chatellerault to produce approximately 500,000 rifles.

During World War I, further contracts were awarded to two American manufacturers: New England Westinghouse (1.8 million rifles) and Remington (1.5 million rifles). The M91 saw widespread service in World War I and was exported or captured in large numbers, resulting in examples bearing markings from a variety of European countries. Over its production life, the M91 underwent numerous design changes. Early rifles featured elements such as a finger rest on the trigger guard, no handguard, short cleaning rod, sling swivels on the magazine and front barrel band, flat rear sight leaf, no recoil bolt, and no sling slots in the stock.

Later examples eliminated the finger rest, added a handguard, used a full-length cleaning rod, omitted sling swivels in favor of sling slots cut into the stock, and incorporated upgraded features such as the Konovalov rear sight, a recoil bolt, and late-pattern (Type 4) barrel bands. Many rifles encountered today show a mix of early and late features due to wartime repairs, refurbishments, or missing components like handguards. Numerous intermediate configurations also exist, as well as variations produced or modified by other nations.
