The 7.62x39mm, also known as the 7.62 Soviet or the .30 Russian Short, is an intermediate cartridge of Soviet origin. It is a rimless bottlenecked cartridge that is widely used due to the popularity of Russian SKS and AK-47 pattern rifles, as well as RPD and RPK light machine guns, all around the world.
The AK-47 was designed shortly after World War II but was later replaced by the AKM version due to production issues with sheet metal. Today, it is the most widely used military-pattern rifle in the world. The cartridge remained the standard for the Soviet Union until the 1970s, when it was partly replaced by the 5.45×39mm cartridge with the introduction of the new AK-74 rifle. This cartridge continues to be used by the modernized AK-74M and AK-12 rifles of the Russian Armed Forces. Despite the introduction of new rifles like the AK-15, the 7.62×39mm cartridge remains a common service rifle chambering in the 21st century.
