Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
A "Trade Brand Name" shotgun is one that was made by a major maker (before 1940) for and was sold by a wholesale sporting goods dealer, a retail chain store or an independent seller who chose the name to go on the gun. Guns with the name U.S. ARMS CO. were made by the Crescent Fire Arms Company of Norwich,CT (1892 to 1930) the largest maker ever of such guns for and were sold by the Supplee- Biddle Hardware Company of Philadelphia, PA. if there are no foreign proof marks stamped on the bottom of the barrels. There were two other uses of the name U.S. Arms Co. One was used on guns made in Belgium by a maker named Henri Pieper or Anciens Establissment Pieper (same company, different names) and the other was U.S. Arms & Cutlery Co. which supposedly existed in Rochester NY from 1876 to 1880. However there is no record of their existence.
This is an original U.S. Arms Co. Laminated Steel barrel side by side double barrel shotgun issued to the United States Pine Ridge Indian Agency in 1889. The top rib of the barrel is marked "Laminated Steel" and the receiver sides are marked "U.S. Arms Co.". The left side of the stock is marked "Benicia Arsenal / Pine Ridge Indian Agency / Arms-Ammo 22 / United States Indian Police -.1889.-". The right side of the stock is marked with "Pine Ridge Indian Agency" and a tacked metal badge with "Indian / U.S. / Pine Ridge Indian Agency / Police / 1889". Both sides of the stock have round headed brass tacks.
These guns saw hard use on the reservations during the 1880s, and no doubt some remained in use well past the turn of the century. When these rare rifles are found for sale they are often devoid of finish and usually look like they have been drug in the mud behind a buffalo. US Indian Police marked and used arms are extremely rare and incredibly desirable collectibles. This wonderful example of a U.S. Pine Ridge Indian Agency marked rifle would be difficult to upgrade and will no doubt be a centerpiece in a very advanced collection of arms from the American West.
