The M1 carbine (formally the United States Carbine, Caliber .30, M1) is a lightweight semi-automatic carbine that was a standard firearm for the U.S. military during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The M1 carbine was produced in several variants and was widely used by paramilitary and police forces around the world, and also became a popular civilian firearm after World War II.
Over a period of 25 years, from 1961 to 1986, Universal Firearms manufactured more than 426,000 carbines. This is a remarkable feat, as it is ten years longer and more than three times the quantity produced by any other commercial carbine manufacturer. Initially, the first Universal Firearms carbines were 100% compatible with surplus GI carbine parts, and they included many of these parts in their carbines. However, as with every other commercial carbine manufacturer, as surplus GI carbine parts became scarce, Universal Firearms began using commercially manufactured substitutes.
