Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Valmet M76 is an upgraded version of the Valmet M62 assault rifle, adopted by the Finnish Defense Forces in 1976 as the 762 Rk 62 76. Both Valmet and SAKO, Finnish gun manufacturers, produced the same assault rifle. Production began in 1976 and ended in 1986. In 1986-1987, Valmet's gun manufacturing unit was transferred to SAKO, and the name Valmet was no longer used for gun and ammunition production. Today, the M76 is still widely used by the Finnish Defense Forces, alongside the older M62, despite the availability of the newer SAKO M95. However, operational M76 assault rifles are gradually being upgraded. This assault rifle has been exported to Indonesia and Qatar.
The Valmet M76 is a selective-fire, gas-operated weapon that is based on the Soviet AK-47 assault rifle. However, it has a modified gas system that reduces recoil. Moreover, the Finnish assault rifle was manufactured using more advanced machinery with tighter tolerances and higher specifications than its predecessor. Hence, it is a superior weapon to the Soviet AK-47 or AKM. In service, the Finnish M76 proved to be a well-made, robust, reliable, and accurate weapon.
This assault rifle uses Soviet 7.62x39 mm ammunition. In the past, the Finnish Defense Forces used the same ammunition as the Soviet Union so that in case of war, Finnish soldiers could use captured ammunition. However, since the mid-1970s, the Soviet Army switched to newer 5.45x39 mm intermediate ammunition, which is now standard with the Russian Army. The Finnish Defense Forces decided not to switch to the new round due to logistical reasons and instead still relied on the older but more powerful 7.62x39 mm ammunition. Civilian semi-automatic versions of the M76, which are chambered for standard NATO 5.56x45 mm and 7.62x51 mm ammunition, are also available.
The Valmet M76 assault rifle is equipped with a tubular steel buttstock that contains cleaning and maintenance accessories. While some civilian models come with a side-folding tubular buttstock, others have solid wooden or polymer buttstocks. The foregrip and pistol grip are made of polymer materials. The M76 features diopter-type iron sights that differ from the AK-style sights. The front sight is mounted on the gas block, which enhances accuracy. The sights are adjusted in the same way as the AK-type sights, and the maximum sighting range is 600 meters, with an effective firing range of approximately 400 meters. Some models come with a side-mounted universal scope rail that can accommodate various Soviet sights. The muzzle brake of the weapon is equipped with an attachment for a knife-bayonet, making it possible to shoot through barbed wire. The rifle, however, cannot mount a sound suppressor or launch rifle grenades.
Valmet M76FS is a civilian semi-automatic only version with a side-folding tubular stock. It was available chambered for the Soviet 7.62x39 mm or the standard NATO 5.56x45 mm ammunition.
