Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Waffenfabrik Mauser A.G. Oberndorf Third Variant Mauser Model 1914 represents a critical stage in the evolution of Mauser’s early semi-automatic pistols, particularly during the tumultuous years of World War I. Chambered in 7.65mm (.32 ACP), the Model 1914 was an update to the earlier Model 1910 design, featuring a slightly larger frame to accommodate a higher magazine capacity—typically eight rounds. The Third Variant, produced during World War I, was marked by both its practicality as a sidearm for military and police forces and its production refinements aimed at streamlining manufacture during wartime demands. Unlike the finely polished prewar commercial examples, wartime 1914 pistols often displayed more utilitarian finishes, reflecting the urgency of mass production. They still retained Mauser’s signature attention to mechanical reliability, featuring a simple blowback design, a heel magazine release, and an internal striker system that gave the pistol its clean, compact profile. These Third Variant pistols were widely issued to German officers and other personnel during World War I, where they served as reliable, concealable sidearms in the trenches and on the frontlines. Serial number blocks from this production run, often accompanied by the distinctive “Waffenfabrik Mauser A.G. Oberndorf a.N.” slide marking, help collectors today identify them as authentic wartime examples. Their historical value lies not only in their mechanical function but also in their role as symbols of Germany’s reliance on both large-caliber Lugers and smaller-caliber service pistols to arm its officers during the war. While overshadowed by the iconic Luger P08 and later the Walther designs, the Mauser 1914 holds a unique place in firearms history as a bridge between civilian self-defense pistols and military sidearms of necessity. For collectors, the Third Variant wartime pistols are especially significant due to their direct association with World War I production and their reflection of Mauser’s adaptability under the pressures of wartime demand.
