Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Founded in 1886 by Carl Walther in the renowned gunmaking town of Zella St. Blasii—later known as Zella-Mehlis—Walther quickly earned a reputation for producing finely crafted, hand-fitted rifles and shotguns. Following Carl’s death in 1915, his sons Fritz, Georg, and Hans Erich continued his legacy of precision and innovation. As early as 1908, Carl and Fritz were experimenting with automatic pistols, including a .32 caliber prototype called the Venus-Pistole. Though it never entered production, it foreshadowed Walther’s future in the handgun world. By 1910 or 1911, Walther made its official debut in the pistol market with the Model 1—a sleek, striker-fired .25 caliber pistol that competed directly with the FN 1906. With its distinctive slide cutout, fixed barrel, and minimalist design, the Model 1 sold over 30,000 units by 1915 and established Walther as a serious player in compact handgun design.

This was followed by the Model 2 and 3 in 1913, which adopted a hammer-fired mechanism and repositioned the recoil spring to encircle the barrel. Walther’s most iconic early design, however, was the Model 4. Introduced around 1913–1914 and based on a 1911 patent, the Model 4 was a rugged, blowback-operated pistol chambered in .32 ACP. It featured a fixed barrel, external extractor, concealed hammer, and a recoil spring housed around the barrel, held in place by a front bushing and a rear sleeve. One of its most unique traits was the left-side ejection port and extractor, uncommon even today. Its slim, well-balanced frame made it instinctive to handle and surprisingly accurate for its size. With its slim, balanced frame and excellent handling, the Model 4 gained a strong reputation for accuracy and reliability.

During World War I, the Prussian military ordered some 250,000 units, making it a major wartime sidearm. Produced over roughly 16 years, the Model 4 evolved through four main variants but consistently upheld Walther’s high standards of engineering and craftsmanship. These semi-automatic pistols laid the groundwork for Walther’s future innovations, setting the stage for legendary designs like the PP, PPK, and postwar P38. The Model 4 remains a landmark in early 20th-century firearms and a lasting symbol of Walther’s enduring impact on handgun design.
