The Walther PP (short for Polizei Pistole, or “police pistol”) is one of the most historically significant semi-automatic handguns ever made, pioneered by Carl Walther GmbH, which introduced it in 1929 as a purpose-built duty pistol for European police forces. It was among the first commercially successful pistols to combine double-action/single-action trigger operation with a blowback-operated slide and fixed barrel, a design that was both reliable and easy to carry at a time when most handguns were still single-action only, and it featured innovative safety elements such as a decocking safety lever and a loaded chamber indicator that contributed to safer handling and adoptability by law enforcement. With a slim steel frame, an exposed hammer, fixed iron sights, and a single-column magazine—typically eight rounds in 7.65×17mm (.32 ACP) or later in .380 ACP—the PP balanced manageable recoil with practical defensive power and a comfortable grip that suited its role as a duty sidearm.
