Originally, Roy Weatherby crafted his production rifles using commercial Mauser actions sourced from FN, Brevex (for magnum calibers), and Mathieu (for left-handed models). For bespoke rifles, Weatherby offered a custom build service, accommodating any action the customer preferred, as long as it could withstand the pressures of the chosen cartridge. Weatherby continued this practice at his small South Gate, California facility until 1956, when he partnered with Sako to carry on the production of his firearms, now based on the Weatherby-FN Mauser actions. Despite this shift, Weatherby continued to manufacture some custom rifles at his South Gate workshop even after this new contract began.
