Item Description
Bryant Ridge Auction Company is pleased to present this desirable bolt-action rifle today for a penny start auction; this is the Weatherby Mark V Deluxe!
This Weatherby Mark V Deluxe is a highly desirable example made in Germany. Our research indicates that production in Germany started at around serial number 20000 and continued until over 43000. All the rifles from 15000 to 43XXX are pre-patent guns that were sold as complete firearms beginning in 1958. In 1964, Weatherby received their patent, and the serial numbers were reset, with the letter "P" being added as a prefix. The first rifle with this prefix was "P1000". The "P" prefix serial numbers continued until about 1972, when production was moved from Germany (J.P. Sauer) to Japan (Howa Arms Co.). This rifle wears the serial number P62306.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Roy Weatherby began building his own rifles on commercial Mauser actions made by FN, Brevex (magnum), and Mathieu (left hand). Customers could request bespoke rifles according to their specifications, using any action they desired, provided it was strong enough to tolerate the pressures of their desired cartridge. For many years, Weatherby produced rifles at his small facility in South Gate, California. In 1956, he contracted with Sako to continue building his firearms based on the Weatherby-FN Mauser actions, while still producing some custom rifles in South Gate following this contract.
In 1956, Weatherby made a departure from the Mauser-based designs and collaborated with the Danish firm Schultz & Larsen to manufacture the 378 Weatherby Magnums using the Schultz & Larsen Model 54 bolt-action. This action was known for its exceptional strength and included some unique features, such as a low bolt-lift and triple gas-escape ports in the bolt. Weatherby subsequently integrated these features into his future proprietary rifle designs.
In 1958, Roy Weatherby introduced the Mark V bolt-action rifle, which was his first proprietary design developed in-house by Weatherby himself and with his head engineer, Fred Jennie. The rifle was specially designed to withstand the higher pressures produced by experimental cartridges, which exceeded 100,000 pounds per square inch. The first Mark V actions were manufactured by Pacific Founders, Inc. in the United States, and the rifles were assembled and finished at the Weatherby facility in South Gate. However, the demand for the new Mark V rifles quickly exceeded Weatherby's manufacturing capacity, so the company contracted with J. P. Sauer in West Germany to produce the rifles. The Mark V continued to be manufactured in West Germany until the early 1970s, when material and labor costs led Weatherby to shift production to Howa in Japan. Many people believe that the machining and finishing of the Howa-manufactured Mark Vs. was an improvement over that of the quality of the Sauer-made guns. In 1995, Weatherby moved Mark V manufacturing back to the United States, where the rifle has been built under contract by both Saco Defense (acquired by General Dynamics in 1998) and Acrometal/ATEK ever since.
During the first five years of production, the Mark V action remained largely unchanged. Manufacturing later moved from PFI in the United States to J.P. Sauer in Germany, where the Sauer-produced version differed from its U.S. counterpart. Weatherby made some modifications to the design, including moving the safety from the receiver to the bolt and replacing the smooth surface of the safety on the U.S. versions with a fluted surface.
