Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Weatherby Mark V, introduced in 1958, is Roy Weatherby’s first proprietary bolt-action rifle, engineered from the ground up to withstand the extreme pressures of his high-velocity magnum cartridges. Its hallmark feature is the nine-lug, interrupted-screw bolt—a unique locking system designed to provide maximum strength while allowing for a short 54-degree bolt lift, enabling faster cycling and smoother operation. Early production involved Pacific Founders Inc. in California for the initial investment-cast receivers, but by 1959, manufacturing had shifted to J.P. Sauer & Sohn in West Germany, where forged steel receivers and hammer-forged barrels were produced to exacting standards. In 1964, Weatherby introduced the Varmintmaster, a scaled-down version of the Mark V with a six-lug bolt designed for smaller calibers, offering a lighter and more compact alternative. By the early 1970s, production moved to Howa in Japan, where Mark V rifles continued to be made with precision until U.S. manufacturing resumed in the mid-1990s. A major redesign in 2016 brought the “New Mark V,” featuring the adjustable LXX trigger, a slimmer stock with an ergonomic palm swell, and hand-lapped barrels guaranteed to deliver sub-MOA accuracy.
