The Mark XXII was manufactured by KGT and Nikko in Japan and Mossberg in the United States over several decades. It was later discontinued in 1989 but was resurrected in 2007 as a bolt action. The original Mark XXII autoloader came in two versions - one with a tubular magazine and the other with a box-type, detachable magazine that held 10 rounds.

The Mark XXII was manufactured by KGT and Nikko in Japan and Mossberg in the United States over several decades. It was later discontinued in 1989 but was resurrected in 2007 as a bolt action. The original Mark XXII autoloader came in two versions - one with a tubular magazine and the other with a box-type, detachable magazine that held 10 rounds.
Weatherby had a strict requirement for premium quality during the production of the Mark XXII, resulting in highly polished barrels with deep bluing and quality walnut stocks that glowed beneath a gloss finish. These rifles were considered special by buyers and are often found in excellent condition.
The Mark XXII autoloader operates through a round bolt in an alloy receiver and features a lever at the right rear of the action that switches function from semi-auto to single shot. When the lever is in the rearward position, the rifle operates in semi-auto mode. However, when switched forward, the lever activates an internal bolt catch, enabling the bolt to feed a fresh cartridge from the magazine into the chamber. The safety is located in the action tang and can be comfortably accessed by the firing-hand thumb.
