Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In the late 1880s, the British Army sought a more reliable, faster-to-reload service revolver to replace its assortment of sidearms, whose solid-frame construction and manual extraction were increasingly seen as outdated. Webley & Scott tendered a top-break revolver design that incorporated an automatic extractor, and in November of 1887, the Webley Revolver, .455, Mark I was formally adopted for British military service. Its top-break action, hinged at the frame, automatically operated the extractor when the barrel and cylinder were lowered, ejecting all spent cartridges simultaneously and significantly reducing reload time. The Mark I was a six-shot, double-action revolver (also capable of single-action), typically fitted with a 4-inch barrel and the distinctive “bird’s-head” grip, chambered for the .455 Webley service cartridge—a relatively low-velocity, heavy lead projectile that balanced stopping power with manageable recoil by the standards of the era. The Mark I was soon followed by improved Marks II–VI, with incremental refinements in strength and design, and Webley .455-calibre revolvers remained the British Army’s standard sidearm through the Boer War, First World War, and into the interwar period.

The large .455 British service revolvers were officially declared obsolete in 1947, although related Webley service revolvers in .38/200 calibre continued into the 1950s–1960s. The Webley & Scott Mark I’s combination of ruggedness, intuitive operation, and improved reload speed made it a cornerstone of British military small arms at the turn of the century, and today it is recognized by collectors and historians for its influential role in the evolution of service pistols.
