To whom it may concern, I received this Whitney from Robert L. Hillberg, the man who designed the Whitney .22 Pistol. The original Whitney cut-away pistols were produced to demonstrate the inner workings of the pistols. They were produced in the Whitney Firearms, Inc. factory… one nickel-plated and one early Wolverine blued.
This particular example is the blued "cut-away" Whitney Wolverine .22 pistol, which was in Robert L. Hillberg's (the Designer of the Whitney Wolverine) personal collection until now!

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Robert Hillberg, a research engineer at High Standard Manufacturing Company, is credited with designing the Wolverine pistol. Drawing on his experience with aluminum casting during World War II, particularly with aircraft guns, Hillberg created this innovative .22 semi-automatic pistol, which was produced from 1956 to 1958 in a limited run of just 13,371 units. Of these, around 500 featured nickel plating, while the remainder were finished in various shades of anodized blue. The Wolverine was equipped with plastic grips available in black, dark brown, or white, with the white grips primarily found on the nickel-plated models. The pistol's frame utilized investment casting by Alcoa, a groundbreaking method for the gun industry at the time, which is now adopted by many major manufacturers. According to THE WHITNEY PISTOL, production of the .22 Whitney Pistol began in January 1956, with early models rollmarked as "WHITNEY WOLVERINE." Unlike most firearms of the era, which often mimicked existing designs, the Wolverine boasted a futuristic look that was entirely original. It was marketed in outdoor magazines as “The Lightning” and dubbed “Tomorrow's Pistol Today.” Robert Lee Hillberg passed away on August 12, 2012, just shy of his 96th birthday, leaving behind a legacy of innovation with over forty patents in firearms design. He famously remarked after reviewing an article about his life, “My God, I must have Hoppes Number Nine flowing through my veins!” When asked about the designs he was most proud of, Hillberg consistently cited the Whitney pistol. Speculation surrounds the potential future of both Hillberg and the Whitney Firearms Company, particularly regarding the impact of a marketing contract with Galef. Regardless, Robert L. Hillberg is recognized as one of the 20th century’s foremost firearms designers, with the Wolverine standing as a testament to his ingenuity and vision.
