Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Jefferson Pistols are offered by the U.S. Historical Society, with the approval of The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation, which maintains Monticello as a national shrine. The issue is limited to 1,000 matched pairs. Once the edition is complete, the tooling and molds will be destroyed in the presence of witnesses from the U.S. Historical Society. Each pair of pistols is individually numbered and registered with the Society. The pistols come complete with a solid mahogany display case and firing accessories. The pistols are Queen Anne, box-lock, cannon-barrel, screw-barrel, flintlocks. "Boxlock" indicates that the hammers are center hung, boxed within the frames rather than fastened to one side. The screw-barrel feature enables the pistols to be loaded by unscrewing the barrels entirely and dropping powder and ball into the upended chambers. This allows a round ball slightly larger in diameter than the bore to be used. The result is a tighter gas seal, which produces a higher muzzle velocity and a more powerful shot.

The Thomas Jefferson Pistols are being crafted by the Williamsburg Firearms Manufactory. The Chief Gun-smith, Tony Williams supervises the fitting of each part to insure that the fit of metal to wood is as perfect as human hands can make it. His standards of tolerance for all mechanical parts is .005 inches. This is little more than the thickness of a human hair. Williamsburg Master Silversmith William deMatteo, who has created important gifts in silver for Presidents, Queens, Kings and dignitaries throughout the world, is making the two sterling silver parts, the grotesque mask and the thumb plate. He is using the painstaking lost wax method, made famous by Cellini in the 16th century, to produce each silver piece one at a time.

The length of the pistols is 9% inches. The barrels measure 5% inches from muzzle to rear of pan--the pans being an integral part of the fixed rear section of the barrel. The screw, or turn-off, portions of the barrels measure 3-7/8ths inches from muzzle to screw joint. Each barrel terminates in a female thread inside the bore which joins with a male thread projecting from the frame. The barrels are brass. So are the frames, marked "Dealtry" on the left side and "London" on the right. The graceful grips terminate in a sterling silver grotesque mask butt cap and bear a sterling silver oval escutcheon at the wrist. When at last it is time to check the lock mechanism of the piece, it must have the right feel, the correct tension, and the right sound or it is mercilessly rejected.

The finest close-grain walnut is selected for the grips just as stringently. The grips are carefully carved and fitted to the brass tangs which extend rearward from the frame. Next the grips are sanded--by hand. Progressively fine sandpapers are used. Result? A beautiful silk satin surface. Now the grip receives the two solid sterling silver inlays, the larger of which, the grotesque mask butt cap, is an exasperatingly difficult piece to cast because of its high relief. The Society has commissioned William deMatteo, the Master Silversmith, to craft these two sterling silver pieces. His standards are simple. Perfection or destruction. Each Jefferson Pistol is not only beautiful but proven to be fully functional as well. The gunsmith's mark on the underside of each barrel attests that this firing has met with success. Afterwards, the residue of the black firing powder is cleaned away and the pistols are given a light coat of oil for protection.

The Display Case is a Valuable Collector's Object and a Handsome Piece of Furniture. The graceful profile of the solid mahogany case is in the Queen Anne style, which was popular in the decorative arts at the time the original pistols were made. The octagonal shape of the case was a favorite with Jefferson in his architectural designs, including Monticello. The pattern of the ebony and boxwood inlay is reminiscent of the classical Roman columns which were frequently part of Jefferson's designs. Each pistol case is made using one master pattern. Note the precisely mitered corners and attention to detail. The inletting is, of course, done by hand to assure the perfect fit of metal to wood. The hinges and handles are solid brass. The key head is brass plate; the shank is steel. Each case is hand sanded and then sealed with a hand-rubbed coat of special sanding sealer. Four coats of lacquer are then carefully laid down. Further hand rubbing produces the desired patina. The interior is hand-lined in velvet. Prior to inserting the velvet-covered lid, Charles Willson Peale's famous silhouette of Jefferson is mounted in the lid so that the portrait can be seen through the brass-framed oval glass window in the lid. The corner compartments may be utilized for storing round balls, flints, and leathers. The two leather corner compartment lids are tooled 24-karat gold. Even though the Thomas Jefferson Pistols are working, functioning, proof-fired pieces, they are exempt from all present and proposed firearms regulations as they are classified as muzzleloading flintlocks. Since these flintlocks require advance preparation, priming and loading, accidental firing is simply impossible.
