The Winchester Model 1200 was introduced in 1964 as a more affordable alternative to the iconic Winchester Model 12, a pump-action shotgun that had been in production since the early 20th century. The Model 1200 was designed to offer similar performance and reliability as the Model 12 but at a lower price point, making it accessible to a wider market. While the Model 1200 retained the classic pump-action design, it featured cost-cutting measures, such as a simpler construction and a more basic finish, compared to the premium Model 12. In 1978, the Winchester Model 1300 was introduced as a continuation of the Model 1200 line. The 1300 featured only minor updates compared to its predecessor, primarily in the design and finish of the furniture (stock and forend). The stock was slightly reshaped, and the finish was upgraded, giving the Model 1300 a more modern appearance.

In 1978, the Winchester Model 1300 was introduced as a continuation of the Model 1200 line. The primary mechanical design remained largely unchanged, and the gun retained its reputation for reliability and smooth cycling, a hallmark of Winchester shotguns. In 1983, when U.S. Repeating Arms Company (USRAC) became the official manufacturer of Winchester firearms, the Model 1300 was among the products that continued production under the new ownership. This transition saw some changes in the manufacturing process but did not drastically alter the design or performance of the shotgun. Over the years, the Model 1300 became popular with hunters, law enforcement, and sport shooters due to its reputation for durability and affordability. By 1992, more than 2.5 million units of the Winchester Model 1200 and Model 1300 (across all variations) had been produced, solidifying their place as some of the most popular and widely produced shotguns in Winchester's history.
The Model 1300 was available in a variety of configurations, including models designed for hunting, tactical use, and sporting clays, which further contributed to its widespread success. However, in 2006, the U.S. Repeating Arms Company, the manufacturer of Winchester firearms at the time, went bankrupt, and as a result, production of the Model 1300 was officially discontinued. Despite its cessation, the Model 1300 remains a beloved and respected shotgun among enthusiasts, known for its smooth action, reliability, and affordable price point. The Winchester Model 1200 Police is a specialized variant of the Winchester Model 1200, designed specifically for police officers, military personnel, and security forces. The Model 1200 Police also came with a durable stainless steel finish.
