Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1912—known as the Model 12 or M12—is a legendary internal-hammer pump-action shotgun with an external tubular magazine. Nicknamed the Perfect Repeater upon its debut, it quickly set the benchmark for pump-action shotguns and maintained its reputation throughout an impressive 51-year production run. From August 1912 until its discontinuation in May 1964, Winchester produced nearly two million Model 12s in various grades and barrel lengths. Originally chambered only in 20 gauge, the lineup expanded in 1913 to include 12- and 16-gauge versions (first appearing in the 1914 catalog), with the 28-gauge model introduced in 1934. A .410 version was never offered; instead, Winchester created the Model 42, a scaled-down derivative of the Model 12, designed directly from scaled drawings of its predecessor. Renowned for its rugged reliability, the Model 12 also served extensively with U.S. armed forces in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the early stages of the Vietnam War, remaining in service until existing stocks were depleted following the end of its initial production run.
