Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this limited-production Canadian-made semi-automatic rifle for a penny-start auction; this is the Winchester Model 490.
Winchester acquired the Cooey rifle factory in Cobourg, Ontario, in 1961 and later produced the Model 490 there between 1975 and 1976, with approximately 60,000 examples manufactured. The closure of the Cooey plant in 1979 brought this period of Canadian production to an end, leaving the Model 490 as a scarce and intriguing reminder of Winchester’s brief venture into semi-automatic rimfire manufacturing north of the border.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 490 is a semi-automatic rimfire rifle chambered in .22 Long Rifle, designed as a practical and economical sporting arm for recreational shooting and small-game hunting. It features a 5-shot detachable magazine, a 22-inch barrel, a folding rear sight, and a checkered one-piece stock that provides secure handling while maintaining a clean, utilitarian profile. Manufactured between approximately 1975 and 1980, the Model 490 reflects Winchester’s late–20th-century emphasis on simplified production and affordability, offering reliable blowback operation and straightforward controls rather than the refined finishes of earlier Winchester rimfire rifles. Its design prioritized function and ease of use, making it accessible to a broad segment of shooters.

Historically, the Model 490 is particularly notable for its Canadian production ties. After Winchester purchased the Cooey rifle factory in Cobourg, Ontario, in 1961, the company produced several models there, including the Model 490 from roughly 1975 to 1976, with an estimated production of about 60,000 units. The closure of the entire Cooey plant in 1979 marked the end of this chapter in Winchester history, lending the Model 490 a distinct place among the company’s rimfire offerings. Today, the rifle remains a scarce and intriguing link to Winchester’s brief foray into semi-automatic rimfire production north of the border, valued by collectors as a tangible reminder of this transitional and geographically unique period in Winchester manufacturing.
