Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 52, introduced in 1920, is a legendary bolt-action .22-caliber target rifle renowned for its exceptional accuracy and fine craftsmanship. Originally developed to meet the U.S. Army’s need for a reliable smallbore training rifle, it quickly gained widespread popularity among civilian target shooters. Early versions featured a five-shot detachable box magazine and iron sights, while the introduction of the “Speedlock” bolt mechanism in 1929 significantly reduced lock time, enhancing accuracy. Over its production run, the Model 52 evolved through several variants—from the 52 to 52A, 52B, 52C, and ultimately the 52E—each incorporating refinements such as improved triggers, redesigned stocks, enhanced bedding systems, and other performance improvements. Production ended in 1980 after approximately 125,000 rifles had been manufactured. In the early 1990s, under Winchester’s ownership by FN Herstal, the Japanese manufacturer Miroku produced the Model 52B Sporter re-issue, marketed under both the Browning and Winchester brands. Browning introduced their re-issue first, produced from 1991 to 1992, featuring a “C”-style Monte Carlo stock with a plastic buttplate.

Winchester followed in 1993 with their version, which closely resembled the original 52B Sporter’s “B”-style straight comb stock with a small cheekpiece, forearm pressure screw, and checkered steel buttplate. These re-issue rifles retained key visual elements of the original Sporter model, including a 24-inch tapered barrel, walnut stock with checkering, and a black forend tip, but they did not feature the same level of hand fitting and precision that characterized the vintage rifles. While they are not as rare or collectible as original Model 52 Sporters, the 52 Sporter re-issue rifles remain a popular and accessible way for shooters and collectors to experience the legacy of the Model 52.
