Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 52, introduced by Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1920, quickly became renowned as the premier smallbore match rifle in the United States and globally. Dubbed the "King of the .22s," it garnered acclaim for its exceptional design and accuracy. Field & Stream recognized the Model 52 Sporter as one of "the 50 best guns ever made," while Winchester historian Herbert Houze praised it as "perfection in design." Originally conceived to meet the demand for a high-precision .22 rifle following World War I, the Model 52 was meticulously engineered as the world's first production .22 accuracy rifle.
Despite early hopes for military adoption, only a limited number of Model 52 rifles were procured by the Army for trials, and it never saw widespread military use. Over the decades, as newer match rifles from competitors like Walther and Anschütz gained prominence, the Model 52's World War I-era design began to show its age. Eventually, due to its high production costs and niche market position, production of the Model 52 ceased when US Repeating Arms took over Winchester rifle manufacturing in 1980. Despite its eventual phase-out, the Model 52 remains a celebrated piece of firearms history, recognized for its precision and enduring legacy in competitive shooting circles.
