Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1978, Winchester introduced the Model 94 Big Bore, a robust lever-action rifle designed to handle a new series of high-pressure rimmed cartridges. Built on a reinforced version of the standard Model 94 receiver, the Big Bore was engineered to withstand a maximum average pressure (MAP) of 52,000 CUP. Notably, the internal components remained identical to the original Model 94; only the receiver was strengthened to accommodate the increased pressure. The Big Bore lineup featured three new calibers: .307 Winchester, .356 Winchester, and .375 Winchester. These cartridges were essentially rimmed, internally strengthened versions of the .308 and .358 Winchester, and a modernized version of the .38-55 Winchester. Rifles in the Big Bore series were distinguished by serial numbers prefixed with "BB."

The initial production occurred under the ownership of Olin Corporation, marking the last new model introduced by Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester RAC). In 1981, the rights to the Winchester name were acquired by U.S. Repeating Arms Company (USRAC), and subsequent rifles were marked "U.S. Repeating Arms Co." The Big Bore 94 XTR models were distinguished by their premium features, including a stunning blue finish and a checkered walnut stock and forend. The stock design varied, with some models featuring a Monte Carlo comb, while others had a conventional straight comb. All Big Bore 94s featured 20" round barrels and a full-length, under-barrel tubular magazine. Despite its innovative design and powerful calibers, the Big Bore 94 did not achieve the anticipated commercial success.

In 1997, the .375 Winchester cartridge was discontinued from the Model 94 line, followed by the .307 and .356 Winchester cartridges in 1998. However, ammunition for all three calibers remains available from Winchester. Collectors and enthusiasts continue to value the Model 94 Big Bore for its unique blend of classic lever-action design and modern cartridge performance. The rifle's distinctive features, such as the reinforced receiver and premium finishes, make it a noteworthy example of Winchester's innovation during the late 20th century.
