Over 25 years ago Winchester set out to create a new 22 caliber rifle. They wanted it to be a quick handling, easy-to-use design with traditional craftsmanship and a large dose of 19th century nostalgia. The rest is history with the Model 9422 being acclaimed as the premier lever action rimfire rifle. History has also been revised with the introduction of the Model 9417 — chambered in 17 HMR. The Winchester 9422 enjoyed a long production run of 33 years with hundreds of thousands of rifles produced in that time. With its smooth action and Winchester name, it is easy to see why it would be so popular. Still, even rimfire enthusiasts sometimes want a little more power and Winchester produced the 9417 chambered in the more powerful .17 HMR. This cartridge is a necked-down .22 Magnum, producing higher velocities giving it longer range and making it suitable for slightly larger game than the .22 Long Rifle can be used for humanely. Winchester only made 9417s from 2003-2004, so it should interest Winchester collectors as well as fans of the .17 HMR cartridge.
