Elvis Presley
In 1958, Elvis’ career was interrupted while he served in the U.S. Army. It was a bittersweet two-year hitch during which his mother, Gladys, passed away, and he met his future bride, Priscilla Beaulieu. Following his discharge, Elvis resumed his hectic schedule, appearing on TV, performing concerts, making motion pictures, and recording music.
Elvis and Graceland
Elvis sought a retreat from the bustling crowds and found it in Graceland, a Georgian colonial mansion he purchased in March of 1957, located eight miles from downtown Memphis. To make it his own, Elvis added a trophy room, swimming pool, and other amenities, and surrounded the compound with a stone wall and an ornate double iron gate adorned with guitar player silhouettes and musical notes. Graceland provided Elvis with a private sanctuary where he could enjoy his success, indulge in his hobbies, and spend quality time with his family. It remained his beloved home for the rest of his life and has since become a place of pilgrimage for countless fans who wish to pay their respects to the King of Rock and Roll.
