Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1886 is a lever-action repeating rifle designed by John Browning to handle some of the most powerful cartridges of its time. The rifle was originally chambered in .45-70 Government, .45-90 Sharps, and .40-82 Winchester, but later became available in other cartridges as well, including the .50-110 Winchester. Even though it was initially designed to be used with black powder, the rifle's action was strong enough to handle smokeless powder with only minor modifications. As a result, it was later chambered in the smokeless .33 Winchester cartridge starting in 1903.

The Model 1886 continued the trend of using heavier rounds and had an all-new and much stronger locking-block action compared to the toggle-link Model 1876. John Moses Browning, who had a long and profitable relationship with Winchester from the 1880s to the early 1900s, designed the rifle. William Mason also contributed to the design by making some improvements to Browning's original design.
In many ways, the Model 1886 was a true American express rifle. It could be chambered in the more potent black powder cartridges of the time, making it capable of handling not just the .45-70 but also the .45-90 and the .50-110 Express "buffalo" cartridges. The rifle's action was strong enough that a nickel-steel barrel was the only modification necessary to work with smokeless powder cartridges. In 1903, the rifle was chambered for the smokeless, high-velocity .33 WCF cartridge.
