Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
John Wayne, the iconic actor, used a specific rifle in many of his cowboy movies, the Winchester 1892. Despite his fame and success, Wayne chose to use the same rifle that had helped him become a star. He appeared in over 170 movies, starred in more than 140 of them, and often had multiple movies playing in theaters at once. Director John Ford cast Wayne in "Stagecoach," where he played the role of Henry “the Ringo Kid” - a rifle-slinging criminal seeking revenge and redemption at the end of a dusty wagon trail. Wayne's character was given a signature firearm, a big-looped Winchester Model 92 Trapper with a short barrel. Ford had the Winchester rifle shortened so that Wayne could easily swing it under his arm in a sweeping and theatrical motion while reloading. This move and the resulting film were a huge success with audiences and it completely transformed Wayne's career. The world was captivated by Wayne's performance, and Wayne himself was enamored with Winchester's light and agile design.
The Winchester 1892 rifle was developed as a follow-up to John Browning's Winchester 1886, which was a popular lever action rifle among sportsmen. However, the 1886 was chambered in .45/70 and was quite heavy, weighing in at 9 1/2 pounds. Shooters who didn't require bear-stopping power wanted a lighter rifle that was chambered for the pistol/rifle cartridge .44-40 and similar rounds of the day. This led to the development of the slimmer and sleeker 1892 rifle, which was available in both rifle and carbine configurations, each lighter than the 1886. Winchester then produced a special-order Trapper, which was even lighter, by chopping down the carbine and was available with 12- to 18-inch barrels. Fans of the rifle loved it and as a result, numerous Wayne commemoratives and reproductions of the rifle have been made over the years. Winchester also made several versions of the rifle, including a 92 on Wayne's centennial birthday in 2007.
The High-Grade rifle is a limited edition, with only 4,000 rifles produced. Each rifle is highly embellished with delicate scroll engraving and is a fond reminder of Duke. It is certain to be treasured for generations to come. The large loop lever is designed for fast action, while the rear carbine ladder sight and brass front blade put you right on target. The right side of the scroll engraved silver nickel nitride receiver features John Wayne's portrait, his initials, and a flowing banner with the words "Courage, Strength, Grit." The deeply blued loading gate and action screws lend an extra touch of elegance to this very special commemorative rifle. John Wayne's silver signature graces the short 18½" barrel. The ladder-style carbine rear sight is fully adjustable. Two silver nickel nitride barrel bands match the receiver. The left side of the scroll engraved silver nickel nitride receiver displays two portraits of John Wayne, along with a banner that reads "John Wayne American, 1907-2007." All of this is richly accented by a deeply blued saddle ring, trigger, and hammer.
