Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The .303 Pattern 1914 rifle, also known as P14, was a British service rifle during the First World War. It was mainly produced by American companies under contract, and it had a bolt-action mechanism and a built-in 5-round magazine. Although it was primarily used as a sniper rifle, it also served as a second-line and reserve issue until it became obsolete in 1947. The P14 was created as a successor to the Pattern 1913 Enfield experimental rifle and was eventually replaced by the U.S. Rifle M1917 Enfield.
Vickers, the primary contractor, could only produce a few rifles, so the P14 was not given much attention. As a result, the Short Magazine Lee–Enfield remained the standard British rifle during World War I and beyond. However, due to the need for additional small arms and a shortage of spare industrial capacity, the British government contracted with American commercial arms manufacturers such as Winchester, Remington, and Eddystone (a subsidiary of Remington primarily set up to manufacture the P14) to produce the P14 for the British. This continued until the US entered the war in 1917.
During World War I, the P14 was mainly used as a sniper rifle because it was found to be more accurate than the Short Magazine Lee–Enfield, either in standard issue form or with modified "fine-adjustment" aperture rear sights. The total number of P14 rifles manufactured was 1,235,293, with Winchester producing 235,293 rifles, Remington producing 400,000, and Eddystone producing 600,000.
