Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Inland Manufacturing Division of General Motors, established in 1922, initially focused on producing wood-wrapped steering wheels and utilized the buildings previously owned by the Dayton Wright Airplane Company. During World War II, Inland became one of the key suppliers of M1 carbines, joining eight other contractor-established manufacturing facilities that helped meet the demand for this essential firearm. Inland played a critical role in ordnance manufacturing during the war, producing not only M1 carbines but also sights for anti-aircraft cannons, tank tracks, and various aircraft components. By 1942, Inland was in full-scale production of the M1 Carbine, a lightweight, semi-automatic firearm that became standard issue for U.S. troops in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. By the end of 1945, Inland had manufactured over 2.5 million carbines, with both the M1 and the M1A1 paratrooper models produced exclusively by Inland, remaining some of the most collectible variants today.

Inland’s contributions to the war effort were substantial, producing nearly 2 million M1 carbines, around 140,000 M1A1 carbines, 500,000 M2 carbines, and 811 M3 (T3) carbines, along with millions of other war-related items like rubber and metal tank shoes and gun sights for Oerlikon 20mm anti-aircraft cannons. The M1 carbine itself, known formally as the United States Carbine, Caliber .30, M1, was a lightweight, semi-automatic weapon that saw use not only in military conflicts but also among paramilitary and police forces worldwide. In contrast, the M2 carbine, an updated version of the M1, featured selective-fire capabilities, allowing for both semi-automatic and full-automatic firing modes. The M3 carbine, a further evolution, combined the M2 with an infrared night sight, marking a significant advancement in combat technology.

This particular M1 Carbine, a Saginaw Subcontract for Inland Division of General Motors, is equipped with an infrared scope, making it an M3 Carbine—one of the rarest and most historically significant versions of the weapon. The M3 Carbine was issued with a boxed kit designed to convert standard M1 or M2 carbines into M3 versions, intended for use by U.S. combat troops during the Korean War. The M3 Carbine featured an M2 infrared night sight that allowed soldiers to see enemy forces at night, even in total darkness, using the infrared system to detect movement. The system had a limited effective range of about 70 yards (64 meters) but was an invaluable asset during nighttime operations. The M3’s ability to visually detect Japanese infiltrators during the invasion of Okinawa was a game-changer, and by the time of the Korean War, the system had been improved to increase its effective range to about 125 yards (114 meters). Despite the added weight of the backpack-mounted battery pack, the M3 Carbine proved invaluable for detecting and engaging enemy forces during night operations, offering a significant tactical advantage.

Contents:

The rifle is accompanied by a set of accessories stored in a green wooden box with metal edges, which features two information plates on the underside of the top. Inside, the box is divided into several compartments, one of which holds a large foam insert with cutouts for small parts. The contents include a spare bulb with its housing, a power pack, battery assembly, two electron tubes, and a cardboard box labeled “CAPEHART-FARNSWORTH ELECTRON TUBE.” The box’s interior hood, the battery assembly, and the power pack are all marked “CORPS OF ENGINEERS U.S. ARMY” and “FOR / SNIPERSCOPE INFRARED 20000 VOLTS.” Also included is a manual titled “DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY TECHNICAL MANUAL / OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS FOR SNIPERSCOPE INFRARED SET No. 1 20,000 VOLTS,” along with all other original components.
