Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Zastava M48 represents Yugoslavia’s effort to rebuild and modernize its small arms industry in the aftermath of World War II, drawing inspiration from both the Belgian M24 Mauser series and the German Karabiner 98k. Produced by Zastava Arms, the rifle was adopted as the standard service weapon of the Yugoslav People’s Army in the early 1950s, serving until it was replaced by the semi-automatic M59/66 SKS in the early 1960s. Though outwardly similar to the 98k, the M48 featured several key distinctions, most notably its intermediate-length receiver and action, which more closely resembled the earlier M24 series. This shorter action meant that many parts, including bolts and other action components, were not interchangeable with German Mauser rifles, limiting direct compatibility. A hallmark of the design was the extended top handguard, which stretched behind the rear sight and terminated just before the receiver ring, providing both visual and practical differentiation from its German counterpart. The M48 thus occupied an interesting transitional space between prewar Mauser designs and the emerging postwar generation of semi-automatic service rifles. In terms of construction, the M48 combined traditional Mauser features with practical modifications tailored to Yugoslav needs. The stock design mirrored the Karabiner 98k but was built heavier and sturdier, usually from Elm or Beech wood, and capped with a thick stainless steel butt plate, contrasting with the lighter Walnut or Beech stocks of refurbished M24/47 rifles. Unlike earlier Mausers, the M48 eliminated the bolt-stop follower feature, allowing the bolt to close on an empty magazine—streamlining operation for soldiers in the field. Over its production run, several variants were introduced, with the M48A marking the shift to cost-saving stamped parts, such as the magazine floor plate, while maintaining critical components like the receiver and bolt as forged steel for strength and reliability. Later versions, including the M48B and others, further embraced production efficiency without compromising safety or durability. As a result, the M48 served as both a reliable battlefield rifle and a symbol of Yugoslavia’s independent arms production capabilities during the Cold War era, while today it remains a collectible military surplus firearm noted for its ruggedness and historical significance.
